With summer right around the corner, spring is that time of year that people vow to lose weight, exercise more and to get organized.

Most magazines are filled with organizing articles and every store seems to be having a sale on organizing products. A majority of people get caught up in the frenzy, go out and purchase organizing products assuming that will take care of the problem. But guess what? It doesn’t. It just adds to the piles of stuff that is already homeless lying around and clogging up precious real estate in their home.  Purchasing cute containers beforehand does not solve the problem…getting motivated does.

In order to tackle your organizational goals, find ways to motivate yourself before taking on any organization project.

Elicit a friend or professional organizer to help you focus and make the process more enjoyable.
This works!  For some people, having someone there to guide, support and keep you focused is key to starting and especially to finishing any organizing project.  If you struggle with not knowing how to organize or where to start then hiring a professional to help you may be your answer. There is a transference of skill that takes place when working with a skilled professional organizer.  Once that skill is learned it can be utilized in all aspects of your life.

Put on some music to relax, light a candle and perhaps even pour yourself a glass of wine.
Creating an enjoyable atmosphere is the goal here anyway so why not start out with setting the mood for just that.

Have a plan.
Pick one area, cabinet or drawer. Start and finish before moving on.  Do not take on too much.  Start small and stay focused on that one space.  Do not leave the room until that area is complete.  After that, you can choose another area or skip down to the next step…

Reward yourself.
Take yourself out for an ice cream, a manicure a movie or whatever.  For those of you that held off on that glass of wine, now could be your time to pour!
